Retirement is for letting loose and enjoying yourself. There are no stressful work commutes, 9 to 5 days to survive, or office politics to contend with; it’s just time for you to do what you want. If, of course, you’ve got the financial means to do so.
Here at Equity Release Supermarket, we understand that not everyone has the money to make the most of their golden years. That’s why we help people over the age of 55 to unlock the money (the equity) they already have tied up in the property, so they can do the things they’ve always wanted – including visiting far-flung destinations.
For a little inspiration as to what your retirement travel plans could look like, we’ve made a list of must-visit holiday destinations.
Tanzania
Home to Mount Kilimanjaro and the Serengeti National Park, Tanzania is a country which boasts both exotic wildlife and breathtaking natural beauty. It has long been a popular destination for tourists who want to watch lions and elephants roam in their natural habitats, but there’s far more to this African nation than simply safaris.
Sange Beach, for instance, is just a small slice of Tanzania’s gorgeous coastline. Time your trip right and you could find yourself watching baby turtles hatching on the region’s powder-white sands.
Alternatively, head to the country’s former capital city, Dar es Salaam, for a taste of local life. Practise your haggling skills at Kariakoo Market, see a 1.75 million-year-old skull at the National Museum, or pay your respects at the Askari Monument.
Iceland
Iceland is the beautiful Nordic land of dramatic scenery, friendly locals, and seemingly unpronounceable locations.
When in Iceland, what better way to wile away the days than in a natural hot spring? The Blue Lagoon is one of the most magical. Here you will find warm waters which are said to rejuvenate the skin and help ease aching pains or joints. This is also one of the best places to witness the breathe taking breathtaking Northern Lights.
Those who like a faster pace of life can follow in the footsteps of Bond legend Roger Moore with a visit to Jökulsárlón. The glacial lagoon featured in the opening sequence of A View To Kill is open to tourists throughout the year and commands spectacular views of Vatnajökull National Park.
Japan
From Sendai in the north to Osaka in the south, Japan is a country of beautiful contrasts. Here you will find sprawling metropolises set aside cherry blossom-infused scenery, and ancient traditions intertwined with futuristic streetscapes.
Away from the bustling capital, Kyoto is a slightly more laid-back city that’s very much rooted in tradition. Travel back to Medieval Japan with a trip to the imposing Nijō Castle, or set off along the Philosopher’s Walk for a pleasant stroll through the city’s Higashiyama district.
Oh, and be sure to stop by Tenzan-no-yu Onsen for a relaxing spa evening. The Onsen water is believed to alleviate muscle pain and stress – the perfect tonic after a tiring day exploring the labyrinthine streets of Kyoto.
Argentina
Is there a better way to spend your retirement than sipping wine in an Argentinian vineyard?
Find out how the country’s wine is made with a tour of Andeluna Cellars in the Mendoza region, a rustic winery surrounded by the Nevado del Plomo mountain range.
Heading back to civilisation, the city of Mendoza is bustling with lively bars and internationally renowned restaurants, serving some of the country’s best vintages. For a one-of-a-kind dining experience, book a table in Azafrán’s wine cellar, where you will have your very own sommelier to help you pick the perfect vintage.
Sri Lanka
After years of working away at the grindstone, you’ve earned a peaceful break in the sun. And Sri Lanka offers just that.
The resorts of Uppuveli and Nilaveli are palm tree-lined paradises which offer post-card perfect views of Sri Lanka’s coast. The combination of golden sands, azure waters, and sleepy, wooden villages, will be enough to make you wish you had retired years ago.
And you don’t have to head back home for a decent cup of tea, either. Sri Lanka is home to many historic tea plantations. Geragama Tea Factory is one of the oldest of these plantations and offers tours of its century-old machinery. Be sure to head to their tea room to taste the final product for yourself.
